What is bowtie methodology?
The bowtie method supports analysis and communication of how high-risk scenarios develop. Users create diagrams – in the shape of a men’s bowtie – to visualise risks and assess possible preventative measures. Summarise scenarios in a single picture and create a clear differentiation between proactive and reactive risk management.
Goals of the bowtie method are to:
- Provide a structure for systematic analysis of hazards
- Support understanding of whether current controls are sufficient (or ALARP – As Low As Reasonably Practicable)
